Topic: ldap stops after working fine. Restart and it again works fine.

The ldap server works fine.  For some unknown reason it stops working. I cant find an error in the log.  Perhaps I don't know what to look for.  When I restart it, the login works fine and I can again send and receive emails.

I used webmin to view and configure ldap.  Webmin changed the formatting of the slapd.conf file and seemed to be the source of the problem. I restored the slapd.conf from before using the webmin and ldap is stable again.

It seems that this file is very touchy and adding a comment will cause the ldap server to fail to restart.  This seems very strange to me.

I think webmin messed up the config file, not OpenLDAP itself.
