Topic: Drop support for RHEL/CentOS 5 in upcoming iRedMail release

Dear all,

We plan to drop support for RHEL/CentOS 5 in upcoming iRedMail release. Here
"drop support" means doesn't support NEW installation on it, not stop supporting
iRedMail servers which still running on it.

Two questions to help me understand what the situation is:

*) Are you guys still prefer RHEL/CentOS 5 for NEW mail server?
*) Which version of RHEL/CentOS are you running?

Here's our tracking since iRedMail-0.8.4 which was released on March 26, 2013:

Installations <-> Distribution and Release Version

3305 CentOS 6
731  CentOS 5
147  Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
137  Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
41   Scientific Linux 6
3    Scientific Linux 5

P.S. Upcoming iRedMail release will use EPEL yum repo on RHEL/CentOS 6 by default,
but not on RHEL/CentOS 5, because packages in EPEL for RHEL/CentOS 5 is really out
of date. Looks like upstream has no plan to bring it up to date. And RHEL 5 is in
End of Production life cycle:

We should drop support for it to reduce our workload and bring you better support for
RHEL/CentOS 6.

Support for below distribution releases will be dropped in upcoming iRedMail release:

  • Ubuntu 12.10. Please use Ubuntu 12.04 (LTS edition, code name "precise") or 13.04 (code name "raring") instead.

  • RHEL/CENTOS 5. Please use RHEL/CENTOS 6 instead. RHEL 5 is in End of Production life cycle: https://access.redhat.com/support/polic … es/errata/

  • OpenBSD 5.1 and 5.2. Please use the latest stable release, 5.3. According to OpenBSD development cycle, only the latest release will be supported by iRedMail. More information on the development cycle can be found here: http://www.openbsd.org/faq/faq5.html#Flavors. P.S. M:Tier has a new package repository which includes the latest security fixes and critical updates for OpenBSD since 5.3: http://stable.mtier.org/

  • openSUSE 12.1 and 12.2. Please use the latest stable release, 12.3.

Hi Jhang,

First of all let me say Thanks for your support till date.

iRedMail - is the best mail solution for Small & Medium business segment, and is very robust and user friendly.

It is good to move ahead with time, but what will be the support scenario for those who are using RHEL/CentOS 5 platform till date. To migrate all their mail from Old Server to New Server - your help will be needed.

Again, we will continue supporting iRedMail servers which still running on RHEL/CentOS 5, just don't support NEW installation on it. So you don't have to migrate to new server immediately. And we have a wiki tutorial to help you migrate to new iRedMail server if you want:

Hi Zhang Huangbin:

I believe your decision to drop support for CENTOS 5 is justified and appropriate. 

All operating systems have a prescribed life cycle.   For RedHat Enterprise products (and derivatives) this is longer than most Linux distros at 5 1/2 years.   Debian for example is typically three years.

The iRedMail community needs to embrace change and recognize that you do not have unlimited resources to support legacy systems.  It is not realistic for you to support multiple forks for iRedMail and iRedAdmin Pro to accommodate operating systems which do not support updates to current mainstream mail packages such as policyd.

I think most of us can agree that you do a stellar job of supporting the iRedMail community and we should zealously support this decision as in our best long term interest.

I have to agree with bmckay. I think it's more than reasonable that you move on. iRedMail doesn't need to support for new installs RHEL/CentOS 5.

Hi,

I´m using RHEL 5.8. I install mail server 4 month ago. I have ~500 mail account.
I use iRedAdmin PRO console.
I woud like to continue using support for RHEL 5.
Red hat support version 5 until 2017.
Please don´t remove support.

I think it's pretty clear in my first post in this thread.

*) "drop support" means you cannot install iRedMail on these distribution releases for a NEW mail server.
*) we will continiue supporting servers which already running iRedMail on it.
*) RHEL 5 is in End of Production life cycle.
*) EPEL repo doesn't work on RHEL 5 support. Packages in EPEL for RHEL 5 is out of date. Are you willing to run Amavisd-new-2.4.5? Its latest stable release is 2.8.0, which is available in EPEL for RHEL 6.
