Hi all,

I'm trying to set up a mail server on a Raspberry Pi running from my home and my 100/10 Mbps (download/upload) broadband.

I've succesfully installled everything and I can use the Roundcube webmail client on the RPi to send emails to any address. Roundcube shows, by the way received mails from inside the machine, I mean, everything that comes from cron jobs (from root@mx.mydomain.com to www-data@mx.mydomain.com) arrives there, although I don't want those messages.

The problem comes when I try to reply to those emails or sent my account there (at the moment is the default one, postmaster@mydomain.com) from outside the Raspberry Pi. I've tried to send those emails from Gmail, and there is even an error shown on Gmail. It's like if the mails were lost in a limbo.

The Raspberry Pi is running from my dinamic IP address, but I use NoIP to be able to access it from remote locations. NoIP has a special field to use MX reccords, and I think I have it set up correctly. On my domain registar, I've got a MX domain:

mx.mydomain.com MX10 mydomain.no-ip.org

And on my NoIP dashboard, I've chosen that subdomain (mx.mydomain.com) as the one that should be used for the mail part, as shown on the attached image.

I've also opened the port for smtp (25) on iptables, that could be a problem, but no difference.

Any hints/tips on why I don't receive any email?

If you use 'mydomain.com' as mail domain (@mydomain.com in email address), you should add DNS records for 'mydomain.com', not 'mx.mydomain.com'.

Hi Zhang, thanks for replying so quickly.

In fact, I've tried several options. I had mx.mydomain.com in the postfix mail.cnf config file, but I tried to change that and use only mydomain.com. I changed also the NoIP mail field, and verified that in my domain registrar I have the A/MX entries ready (the A entry is in fact a CNAME that points to a no-ip.org subdomain).

I'm affraid the problem persists. I can send email outside, but not receive it.

Are you sure there isn't another firewall in the way between you and the outside world? Maybe in your ADSL router, etc, or the port to receive mail has been forwarded from your ADSL to your Pi? Or possibly even your ISP is blocking it.

Use something like SheildsUp to test what ports are open to the outside world, google 'GRC sheildsup' will get you the right link.

I really don't think so, and as I've said, iptables is fine in the Raspberry Pi afaik. I've checked the router and everything seems fine.

I think the problem lies within the configuration of the NoIP service and maybe my domain registrar.

Is there some guide to configure a server with NoIP (or other dynamic DNS service) as a mail server?

First, quote again:

if it doesn't work for you, please show us related log content on your server, and error message.

2: dynamic IP address is REALLY REALLY REALLY bad for mail service. Many public RBL services block dynamic IP addresses.

Thank you Zhang, I read your previous email and tried the DNS change (with mydomain.com) but no luck (or I've done something wrong again). Yes, I've read that dynamic address is not the tipical way to do it, but I can send emails anyway, why can't I receive them?

Maybe this could be useful to detect the problem I guess there's nothing at /etc/log/mail that could be useful if the mail doesn't get there in the first place, isn't it?

Postfix is indeed running, and the port is opened on iptables, so maybe it's an ISP blocking issue... I'll try to contact them, but I know this is the main problem with this kind of setups. ISP have to try to avoid spammers, and I understand if they detect something strange, they block that to avoid more problems.

I'll let you know if I make some progress on this, thanks!

After several attemps, and I almost surrendered, but then today I started to try things again and, strange enough, I can receive mail at my Raspberry.

The problem now is that I can't send any mail. As soon as I try, I get an "Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender" that lets mw know that my mail is considered as spam. The text is as follows:

I've confirmed that my ISP has NOT blocked my 25 port, so at this end everything should work. I've only sent mails to my personal accounts, but I was trying to configure DKIM and SPF and did not mark those messages as "not spam". Maybe this is the reason now I can not send mail from the Raspberry Pi? Also, I disabled Amavis/ClamAV in order to free memory from the RPi...

Edit: From what I see, I can remove the blocking (or at least try to) from the Spamhaus Blocklist Removal Center:

But there it informs me it's my responsability if I do and then spam is sent from that IP. COnsidering the IP is dynamic, I'm a little affraid about this.  The router has been restarted at least once in these days, and I'm starting to believe the new public IP is the problem (the last one could send from roundcube, but it didn't receive anything on my tests)...

Tips/Hints?

I had this problem also.
When using a dynamic IP address, inevitably some IPs you get assigned by your ISP are in the blacklists. You can use your ISPs SMTP server as a relay to guarantee email sending. You will have to get down and dirty in some postfix config files tho'.
Here's how I did it :-
confirm your ISPs smtp server details (usually something like mail.ISProvider_example.com) and your ISPs login details. (usually your-email@yourISP.com)

add these lines to your /etc/postfix/main.cf

relayhost = [mail.ISProvider_example.com]
smtp_sasl_auth_enable = yes
smtp_sasl_password_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/relay_passwd
smtp_sasl_security_options =

(some of these lines may already be there so modify or uncomment as necessary)
uncomment this line in your /etc/postfix/master.cf (remove the #)

#submission inet n       -       -       -       -       smtpd

create file /etc/postfix/relay_passwd
and add the following line
mail.ISProvider_example.com login:password

save and chown root:root /etc/postfix/relay_password
then chmod 600 /etc/postix/relay_password
/etc/postfix/sasl_passwd needs changing into a format that Postfix can read
so:
postmap /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd
then:
/etc/init.d/postfix restart (or reboot your machine)

try sending an email check your /var/log/mail.log to see if ok
all commands must be root or sudo

Thx... I've tried to configure the parameters you mention but I've made some mistake for sure. I get this message on /var/log/mail:

The details in /etc/postfix/relay_passwd file are NOT your local server OR DNS provider, but those of your internet service provider and the login your router uses to connect to the internet. e.g. for talk talk which is a UK based isp the line would be

smtp.talktalk.net  elvispresley@talktalk.net:password

once you have edited as root/sudo you will need to

sudo postmap /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd and restart postfix

This is what the output to mail.log should look like

Understood! My service provider is Movistar in Spain (its a fiber connection, 100/10), I'll look for the smtp provider and see if that user/pass combo works...

Bad news. My ISP (Movistar) does not provide email accounts since april 2013. Can I still solve that without an ISP's email account?

Try this, it may work

smtp.movistar.es login:password

remember to sudo postmap /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd and restart postfix

if not, post your main.cf and master.cf and I'll have a look.
you could always sign up to a smtp relay company such as http://www.authsmtp.com. I had considered this but got mine working in the end

Yes, I already guessed that thing about the relay_passwd file. Any way, I don't have a user/pass for any account at my ISP's SMTP server, so I can't do anything at all in this case.

Anyway, this is strange because when I first installed iredmail, the situation was exactly the opposite to the one I have now. I could send emails from Roundcube on the Raspberry Pi. They were detected as spam in my Gmail account, for example, but sending worked. Receiving, on the other hand, did not work at first.

Now the situation is the reverse, so I shouldn't need your solution in the first place. Weird. Maybe I should reinstall everything from the beginning. I've tried so many things that I don't recall which ones could really worked and which didn't.

when I first started some mails would be delivered to spam and others bounced back by the recipients server. It's not that there is anything wrong with the default iRedMail setup so reinstalling won't help (don't put yourself through that unnecessarily).
Its that some recipients allow unauthenticated emails in, but to spam or junk folders, and other recipients have a policy of bouncing back anything from particular ip blocks that are assigned to dynamic ranges.
Your IP will be given from a block of addresses owned by Movistar. some of them will be black listed, others will not.(hence why previously mail got through and now it doesn't!) Only Movistar can request them to be unlisted.
Spamhaus in particular have a register of blocks of IP addresses assigned to dynamic ranges held in databases, and if that particular recipient uses Spamhaus as a blacklist source, your email will be bounced. They are permanently listed, and will never be removed. The trick of using a smtp relay fools the recipients server to believe that your email has come from a fixed IP that is not in any of the blacklist, as the ISPs keep them out. (and not your actual IP address). This is how spammers crack a smtp relay server and send shed loads of spam! You will just be doing it legally.
If you look in your router config page you may find a login and password. Just try that and see what happens. Please don't give up!! Its not your server, just the hoops you have to jump through having a dynamic IP address.
If you can't find any details on your router/modem you have 2 options
1/ ask your ISP for a fixed IP address
2/ sign up for a smtp relay account as previously mentioned (no I don't work for http://www.authsmtp.com/)

Fantastic explanation mwharbottle, thank you so much for your time!! Everything makes sense, and I'll try both solutions. Requesting a fixed IP is expensive at Movistar (that service alone is 14€/month, around $20/month) so it's not an option right now. I've checked my router config but found nothing, I'll try again.

Maybe the authsmtp could be the answer. I'll try that if needed and will let you know about my progresss. Thanks again and have a nice weekend wink

you can use gmail to relay your mails.

Podés usar gmail con tu usuario y password para hacer relay.
El único problema es que siempre va a salir la cuenta de gmail como remitente, pero me imagino que si estas usando una Rpi para mandar será solo para avisar cosas.

Not a bad idea wink Thx for the tip, I'll try that as well. I would like to use it as a normal server with real addresses, but that could make the day just in case.

No unfortunately I did not write that post.
I do spot in your output file "host smtp.gmail.com[173.194.67.109] said: 530 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first"
Just make sure the the line "smtp_use_tls = yes" is in your /etc/postfix/main.cf
try just doing "sudo postmap /etc/postfix/relay_passwd" again before
"sudo /etc/init.d/postfix restart"
If that doesn't work you could email me your main.cf and master.cf files (rather than posting them for everyone to see) and I could look at them. Just let me know.
