There is a high load average on the mail server, all the time, this makes mail delivery slow taking from 40 minutes to up to 2 hours, even withing the same mail server.

Disabling spam assasin and amavis is not an option, because people complain about how much spam they got.

This machine has 4 cores and 8gb of RAM, so the mail server is really hungry, even with tiny amouts of mails inside (200 mails is enough to just freeze the server)

*) Find out which software are busy and eat most system resource.
*) Enable postscreen or DNSBL service to help reduce spam.

Re: Very high load average on mailserver

This reduced the load from 4 to 3 if you are not using amavis.

when you disable the content_filter in /etc/postfix/main.cf and stop the amavis service the load is reduced from 22 to 3-5.

SO there should be a problem in the amavis configuration file
