Hi there, smile

got a strange case.

a windows client, with outlook 2013, when the user received a bunch of mails, and mark all read, and within those bunch of emails, some are requesting a read reply. When the user doing mark all as read, and those read replies were rejected by postfix, and fail2ban count it as one fail. If there are many read replies, that IP may be banned by postfix-iredmail.

maillog as:
May 18 13:51:57 mail postfix/smtpd[17918]: NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from host.isp.com [111.222.111.222]: 554 5.7.1 <readreplyrequest@domainname.com>: Recipient address rejected: Policy rejection; from=<> to=<readreplyrequest@domainname.com> proto=ESMTP helo=<workstationhostname>

my question is:
is outlook handling the read reply as a normal message? and
why the sender is: from=<> in the mail log? not the mail reader's email address?
that is the outlook issue or the postfix issue?

anyone had the similar experience? and any suggestion?

Thanks.

Miles

It's more a MUA (Outlook) issue, it should use sender email address instead of null.

As a temporary solution, you can disable iRedAPD plugin "reject_null_sender" in /opt/iredapd/settings.py.

Dear Mr. Zhang,

thanks for the reply.

but, checking MS forum.
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Fo … erallegacy
per RFC2298, "Message Disposition Notification (MDN) messages are defined in RFC 2298. Message Disposition Notification (MDN) messages should be sent with blank sender."

then, null_sender should be normal for Outlook?

anyone has the similar experience?

Thanks. smile

Yes null sender is ok for MDN, the problem is, spammers use null sender to deliver spams too, this is a conflict.
