If I want to send mail from an alias address (e.g. user@domain1.com sends mail with a from address of alias@domain2.com) is any special configuration required? Or does authenticating automatically allow them to do this?

It's allowed by default (in iRedAPD plugin `reject_sender_login_mismatch`).
