Topic: Using ZFS for /var/vmail?

Hi,

are there any concerns on using ZFS for /var/vmail? Either with Ubuntu or FreeBSD?
Having the possibility to use zstd compression and snapshots IMHO would be great.

I personally didn't try ZFS for mailbox storage yet, but nothing stops you to try it. smile

Perhaps somebody else has running it wink

ZFS is my file system of choice on file servers (FreeBSD, TrueNAS) and VM hosts (Proxmox) and it really is a new era compared to the good old stuff (ext4, xfs, ...).

Re: Using ZFS for /var/vmail?

We use ZFS for all of our mail storage, both on a several-thousand-user proprietary system, as well as our current iRedMail test systems. And yes, snapshots greatly simplify mailstore backup!

Our test systems are ProxMox VMs running CentOS 8, with '/var/vmail' symlinked to a separate .qcow2 file functioning as a single-dev zpool just for mail storage. Always plenty to learn to do it well, but generally trouble free, at least regarding the ZFS part. Just do some research on kernel upgrades with ZFS on Linux. :-)

We do some storage of other types on FreeBSD+ZFS, but no mail yet. Someday soon...
