Hi Zhang,

Please help. I'm getting the below error from /var/log/maillog: I've been troubleshooting this for 2 weeks now.

"postfix/submission/smtpd[48795]: Anonymous TLS connection established from unknown[192.168.222.2]: TLSv1.2 with cipher ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384 (256/256 bits)
postfix/submission/smtpd[48795]: 4DgZ8h5Z47z2hLWR: client=unknown[192.168.222.2], sasl_method=LOGIN, sasl_username=jung@mydomain.com
postfix/cleanup[57131]: 4DgZ8h5Z47z2hLWR: message-id=<04d601d70519$2d974a90$88c5dfb0$@mydomain.com>
postfix/submission/smtpd[48795]: lost connection after DATA (57282 bytes) from unknown[192.168.222.2]
postfix/submission/smtpd[48795]: disconnect from unknown[192.168.222.2] ehlo=2 starttls=1 auth=1 mail=1 rcpt=2 data=0/1 commands=7/8"

The above error showed when I used outlook. It's intermittent. sometimes i can send mail
even with attachment but sometimes the email is just there in "outbox".  Sending mail without attachment is perfect.

Here is the troubleshooting steps i've done:
a. Adjusted server timeout in outlook
b. Installed lets encrypt ssl certificate
c. Disabled window scaling (/etc/sysctl.conf)
d. Allowed only IPV4  (/etc/postfix/main.cf = inet_protocols = ipv4)
e. Allowed port 993/587/25 in windows firewall and in ubuntu UFW
f.  Attachment size is just kb.

Additional Info:
When sending email using outlook with 5MB attachment, the message landed in "outbox"
I've already increase outlook 2016 attachment size to 25.6MB from regedit "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Preferences. note also that in iredmail i've increased the attachment to 35MB.

This is the error i've got sending 6MB attachment:

Task 'jung@mydomain.com - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC0F) : 'The connection to the server was interrupted. If this problem continues, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

You help is really much appreciated.

Thanks,
JunG

Re: Lost connection after DATA (xxx bytes) from unknown[192.168.222.2]

Hi there,

we have just the same situation here. These kind of "lost connection" error increased by factor 10 since updating to iredmail 1.3.2 some months ago.

@mrberni,

How sad... I'm troubleshooting this error for two weeks now and not lucky enough to fix...

Hope that someone will shed light for the benefit of all iredmail users who will encounter this kind of error in their production environment...

Thanks.

Re: Lost connection after DATA (xxx bytes) from unknown[192.168.222.2]

Weird issue ...

Few suggestions:

*) Could you please turn on debug mode in Postfix for the "submission" transport, then try again?
https://docs.iredmail.org/debug.postfix.html

Note: document uses "smtp" transport for example, you should use "submission" transport instead in your case.

Let's see what Postfix logs and hope they will be helpful.

*) Did you try different MUAs? e.g. Thunderbird. do they all have such issue? If just Outlook, they it MIGHT be an Outlook issue. Your post mentions it's Outlook 2016, is it possible to get a newer version for testing? I'm not sure whether Outlook 2016 supports Let's Encrypt cert very well.

Re: Lost connection after DATA (xxx bytes) from unknown[192.168.222.2]

Hi Zhang,

Note: document uses "smtp" transport for example, you should use "submission" transport instead in your case. - can you give me steps on how to do this?

I haven't tried other MUA aside from Outlook of different versions. I will try to install thunderbird and check if there is no problem.

Anyway, please find below postfix log.

Thanks.

Re: Lost connection after DATA (xxx bytes) from unknown[192.168.222.2]

Hi Zhang,

Even using Thunderbird i'm getting the below error:

Send Message Error
     Sending of the message failed.
The message could not be sent because the connection to outgoing server (SMTP)
     mail.mydomain.com timed out. Try again.

note:
a. sending email without attachment is working good.
b. thunderbird config:
IMAP - 993 - STARTTLS
SMTP - 587 - STARTTLS

Please have a look at the attached screenshot.

Port 993 must be SSL, not STARTTLS.

Try to disable Fail2ban and firewall services temporarily and test again.

Re: Lost connection after DATA (xxx bytes) from unknown[192.168.222.2]

Hi Zhang,

Please find my answer to your suggestions:

a. Port 993 must be SSL, not STARTTLS. - yes i set this to SSL but the same error

b. Try to disable Fail2ban and firewall services temporarily and test again. -
Ans: Yes, i disabled fail2ban, spamassassin, UFW/Iptables and restarted all the services and even restarted the server itself but did not fix the problem

Any possible solution? please help because i'm getting this error for almost 1 month now and all my users are keeps on complaining.

I'm willing to provide any possible log to help you investigate the matter.

Please find /var/log/maillog after disabling fail2ban,ufw/iptables and restarted all the services and sent message using outlook.

Re: Lost connection after DATA (xxx bytes) from unknown[192.168.222.2]

Try to comment out this line in /etc/postfix/main.cf, then restart postfix service and try again:

smtpd_data_restrictions = reject_unauth_pipelining

Re: Lost connection after DATA (xxx bytes) from unknown[192.168.222.2]

Hi Zhang,

Thanks for the swift reply.

originally the "smtpd_data_restrictions = reject_unauth_pipelining" doesn't have #(comment).

what i did was put a comment on #smtpd_data_restrictions = reject_unauth_pipelining and send a message with 3mb attachment but getting the same error.

Take note that fail2ban,ufw/iptables was stop already

Thanks.

Re: Lost connection after DATA (xxx bytes) from unknown[192.168.222.2]

hmm, no clue right now.
I suggest posting to Postfix mailing list to get help from other experts:
http://www.postfix.org/lists.html (subscribe to "postfix-users" and asking)

Re: Lost connection after DATA (xxx bytes) from unknown[192.168.222.2]

Hi Zhang,

Can i enable port 465 in postfix as mentioned in the link below and configure outlook to use as smtp submission?

https://www.linuxbabe.com/mail-server/e … 65-postfix

I am desperate to solve this problem.

Thanks,
JunG.

We don't take any responsibility for third-party documents.

Follow this tutorial instead:

Re: Lost connection after DATA (xxx bytes) from unknown[192.168.222.2]

Hi Zhang,

Enabling port 465 still did not fix the issue. even opening smtp tcp ports 25,465 and 587 in our firewall for outgoing..

The weird thing is that, i can send email using outlook without attachment and even with attachment less than 1MB.

However, it the attachment is more than 1MB then the message automatically go to "outbox" and stay there.

Thanks,
Jung

Is it possible for you to test with a newer Outlook?

Re: Lost connection after DATA (xxx bytes) from unknown[192.168.222.2]

Hi Zhang,

I'm using Office 365 but the same issue. The message landed in outbox forever with 2mb attachment.

Please see list of configuration attachment.....

Re: Lost connection after DATA (xxx bytes) from unknown[192.168.222.2]

Hi Zhang,

You can now close this ticket: It is resolved:

The issue here is that, Cisco Meraki Firewall is blocking the outgoing SMTP port 587-TLS using the FQDN for the incoming and outgoing mail server because of DNS issue... after adding the FQDN in my DNS server everything is working fine.

Thanks.
