Please search this forum with Google, you should find some replies (by me).

Short answer: iRedMail uses its own ldap schema, fixed ldap tree and store some meta data in ldap, not simply querying account id from ldap, this makes it not that easy to use an external ldap server. I suggest simply use OpenLDAP configured by iRedMail for mail service.
