I suggest iRedMail to add support to OpenSMTPD because it was the built-in component of OpenBSD and it is available on any other BSD or Linux distros. It was considered more secure because of the good reputation of OpenBSD project.
I also recommend to add support to OpenBSD ldapd and httpd on OpenBSD platform for the same reason. They were built in components which don't need extra installation and they have better security reputation.

iRedMail supports ldapd in early releases, but removed due to no one chose it. Consider the small user base of OpenBSD, it's reasonable that no one chose ldapd. To reduce our workload, we removed ldapd support. FYI https://github.com/iredmail/iRedMail/bl … geLog#L465 By the way, i'm still a big OpenBSD fan today since 2005 or even earlier days.

We have multiple alternatives for one feature, e.g. for SMTP service, we have Sendmail, Exim, Postfix, OpenSMTPD. for web service, we have Apache and Nginx, you may even suggest Lighttpd, etc. We have to choose the "best" one for users and just use one of them to reduce our workload, but as you can imagine, there's no "best one" for ALL users. We have to balance and choose the most widely used one, which also has great reputation (security, performance, community support, etc). Due to the small user base of OpenBSD, we didn't choose opensmtpd and httpd (and dropped ldapd). Besides, opensmtpd didn't even exist when we started iRedMail in 2007 (According to smtpd(8): "The smtpd program first appeared in OpenBSD 4.6 (released on Oct 18 2009).", and smtpd took a long time to be feature rich, then ported to Linux. I tracked and still checking all its releases till today.)

I had plan to develop an email server solution for OpenBSD, and OpenBSD only, with the wonderful built-in daemons like spamd, smtpd, relayd, httpd, ldapd, pf, etc. There was one similar project[1] before but abandoned years later. I convinced myself not to do this due to its small user base although i'm a big fan of OpenBSD. It was so hard for me to convince myself to drop OpenBSD support in early iRedMail releases, but i brought it back few years later and still supported in latest iRedMail-1.6.8.
