Topic: Why did the creators of iRedMail abandon their project?

Hello everyone,

Why did the creators of iRedMail abandon their project?
Why is there ancient documentation on the official website that doesn't work now?
Why is it not updated for several years?
Why is it impossible to install iRedMail with it?

Why is this instruction useless for Freebsd installation?

For example, I tried installing iRedmail on Freebsd 14.1, but the this instructions don't work and the installation process fails with a fatal error
A colleague Kwabena Twumasi confirmed this this problem.
And there are very many such problems with the documentation.

The developers of iRedMail are they what - slackers and lazy?

If you are so unsatisfied, then change to another solution that fits you more

iRedMail is neither abandoned, it gets steady patches and new releases, nor is the documentation outdated for several years

FreeBSD would never be my choice for a server for several reasons, it causes too many problems due to changes of available packages, some even get completly cancelled, and it is hard to maintain a script that handles so many different distributions without a hassle

Instead of your unproductive rant, why don't you help to update found sources that would need an update, or don't work? or are you one of those lazy slackers that you tried to call out?

Re: Why did the creators of iRedMail abandon their project?

Would you like to help fix it by contributing a patch? I'm more than happy to test and merge it.

Re: Why did the creators of iRedMail abandon their project?

Your message is quite baseless.

The only valid thing you mention is that sometimes the documentation is a little off.

However I feel like this is one of your first forays into the world of FOSS.

If I had a dollar for every FOSS thing I tried to install and the instructions weren't exactly right or the expected thing didn't happen, id have tens of thousands of dollars.

If you had a complaint like this about something you paid for it would be one thing. But your entitlement to a perfect experience for something that's free is something else.....

You'd probably be more likely to actually get help if you just posted your problem with logs and output and asked for help instead of demanding that the free thing your trying to use have perfect instructions and calling the people most likely to be able to helping you lazy..........

Your tirade says: "Eat what they give you"

Isn't it?  But I, and many others users, don't want  to eat shit!

You're afraid of the truth I told you. Instead you blame me for your own shortcomings.

And this instead of fixing the many flaws in the documentation.
You want proof? Take a look at this screenshot!

It shows FreeBSD version, hmm, 9.
It's been 10 years. Ten years! In that time, versions 10, 11, 12, 13 and finally 14 have been released. Fourteen!
And your dilapidated from time to time manual for FreeBSD 14 doesn't work.
What has been done in the documentation for installing iRedMail on the new FreeBSD? No-thing!!!
So which one of us is the slacker?

Yes, you are releasing new versions of iRedMail. But why? Every new version is worse than the old one. Because it is always slower and consumes more resources from the server. Who needs such pointless progress?
And tales that new versions are safer and have fewer vulnerabilities, leave them for unintelligent children.

I've been using iRedMail for a long time, but would love to go back to the old versions. But alas - you have made it so that it is impossible, and forcefully push to install only the new version.

But the biggest evil in iRedMail  is the Antivirus. It consumes a colossal amount of resources from the server, and many users simply disable it.
Yes, when installing iRedMail you can refuse SOGO, Postgree, etc.
Why didn't you make it possible to opt out of using Clamav  at the iRedMail installation stage?
Because you don't want to notice your faults because you're lazy and don't want to change anything!

I, unlike you, am not lazy, and I diligently follow the steps specified in your shameful instructions.
But I am only a user, and I can not and do not know how to change anything in iRedMail and its documentation.

It is not my business. My business is to use iRedMail and point out the defects found.
Your business is not to blame the problems of iRedMail on its users, but to fix them.

Learn to face the truth!

Best regards,

I am a iRedmail user.

IRedmail is one of the best OSS thats well integrated and have updated every quarter or half year .

Its fast growing and you should keep in the support community to stay connected.

Trust me.

FreeBSD is a nice choice. But I have seldom install a standalone except is a bundle iso like pfsense or vyos nowadays.

Re: Why did the creators of iRedMail abandon their project?

That iRedMail is an excellent project, no one is arguing.
Yes, iRedMail is an excellent unique project, a one-of-a-kind  project, without  competitors.
I have been using iRedMail for a very long time, I have it installed on several servers.

The problem with the project is its three major flaws:

1. Outdated documentation that no one is in a hurry to update.
2. Instead of updating the documentation there is a frequent mad race of versions to the detriment of the quality of the project.
It would be better to release a Long Time version 1 a year or once every 2 years.
3. And finally, the absolute evil - Antivirus, Clamav.
It should be turned off by default when installing iRedMail.

Take a poll on antivirus and you will see that few people need it.

I don't see a problem with clamav, if you don't want it, then disable it

Re: Why did the creators of iRedMail abandon their project?

On the contrary, it should be disabled  by default as a useless function, imho.
And turn it on only if there is a real need.

Upd.  You can argue about the need for an antivirus indefinitely and still remain with your personal opinion.
Therefore, it is better to hold a vote, and then its results will show whether it is needed by default or not.

How do  hold a vote here?

I have seen many posts where users point out errors with the documentation.
And then a reply from Zhanghuangbin that the update has been made.
I have used FreeBSD for many years, and I have not had issues with the documentation- but I don't use jails.
Please post where corrections/improvements would be needed, instead of complaining that it's "abandon"ed when it clearly isn't.

I see now that the FreeBSD jail documentation says: "This tutorial was tested with FreeBSD 10 and the latest ports tree, but it should work on FreeBSD 9 and other releases." So the document was originally written many years ago. It should hold that FreeBSD 14 qualifies as an "other release".
Does any section of the document not work with the currently supported version 14?

Re: Why did the creators of iRedMail abandon their project?

@GerryM:

I have already reported an error installing iRedMail on FreeBSD 14.1: https://github.com/iredmail/iRedMail/issues/260.

When I tried to perform this installation, I got exactly the same error.

Re: Why did the creators of iRedMail abandon their project?

Stop the complaining RIGHT NOW. iRedMail is free and open source software (FOSS), either wait for someone to fix it, or pay someone to get it fixed. FOSS developers are not your slave, or free workers, and they don't take any responsibility to satisfy you, just take it or leave it.

- Maybe some doc is old and even not working on new OS release, this is quite normal and i don't understand why you're yelling. Did you ever write tutorials? Do you still check the tutorials everyday to make sure they're up to date? If not, shut up.
- Like @GerryM said, just "post where corrections/improvements would be needed, instead of complaining that it's "abandon"ed when it clearly isn't."

I don't want to hear such complains anymore, i hate 20/30/40/... years old baby.
