I don't know if this is a problem only at our site, or if it's something more general, but I thought I would report it here in case anyone else encountered the same thing.
Our cron-based automatic cert renewal started failing last week out of the blue. The procedure had been working for many months, and no relevant changes had been made recently.
It turned out to be related to an incorrect server block in the nginx configuration, but we don't know if the conf changed or if the folder the conf pointed to changed.
