This is hot news since the blog post was published, and i spent a lot time to try to figure out what it means to iRedMail, iRedMail users, and other CentOS users.
- According to CentOS website[1], Stream is "a midstream between Fedora Linux and RHEL".
- Also read FAQ on CentOS website[2],
- Also read FAQ on RedHat website[3], especially answer of question "Why was CentOS Stream created?".
MY PERSONAL OPINIONS:
- I welcome Stream.
- CentOS Stream will be (slightly?) less stable than CentOS Linux, but a lot stabler than Fedora.
- CentOS Stream should be still stable enough for a production server.
- CentOS 7 / 8 users who are familiar with RPM/YUM/DNF and don't want to switch to other linux/bsd distributions, should migrate to Stream 8 in the future, and it seems very easy according to FAQ[4], then switch and stick to Stream 9 AFTER it's considered as stable (e.g. after Stream 9.1 or 9.2 is announced).
- We plan to support Stream 9 when it's first stable release is announced.
NOTES:
- Since Stream is not(?) widely used, i may change my opinions after we got more experience. So don't be so serious right now.
- The original founder of CentOS project is trying to build a new distro as downstream of RHEL, maybe this is what you guys are looking for. We sure will keep eyes on it. https://rockylinux.org
